These cars, trucks and SUVs come with a hefty price tag that extends well beyond the dealership.

Online driver education platform Zutobi can help, with the release of its analysis “The Cheapest and Most Expensive Cars to Run in the U.S.”
To determine which cars are the most expensive to run, Zutobi gathered data on the most popular vehicles in the country. They looked at the cost of gas per mile with information from the U.S. Department of Energy, and the average miles driven per year using data from the Federal Highway Administration. Unless otherwise specified, vehicles are judged by their 2023 model.
Let’s see which cars will make a bigger dent in your budget.
10. Hyundai Veloster N
For the 2022 model of this vehicle:
- Average cost of gas per mile driven: $0.35
- Estimated cost of gas for the year: $4,717
- Average annual insurance premium: $1,824
- Estimated total cost for fuel and insurance: $6,541
This vehicle is well-rated by Edmunds, an expert car review site, thanks in part to its warranties. It gets about 25 mpg on average. This model doesn’t have adaptive cruise control but does feature other driver assists like blind spot monitoring.
9. RAM 1500 Hybrid
For the 2023 model of this vehicle:
- Average cost of gas per mile driven: $0.36
- Estimated cost of gas for the year: $4,851
- Average annual insurance premium: $1,693
- Estimated total cost for fuel and insurance: $6,544
The RAM 1500 Hybrid is well-rated and, despite making it onto this list, is more affordable to fuel than the average truck. It has an optional 12-inch touchscreen and is compatible with both Apple and Android devices. The RAM 1500 Hybrid can tow more than 11,000 pounds, but doesn’t come with standard driver assist features.
8. Toyota Tundra
For the 2023 model of this vehicle:
- Average cost of gas per mile driven: $0.37
- Estimated cost of gas for the year: $4,986
- Average annual insurance premium: $1,608
- Estimated total cost for fuel and insurance: $6,594
The Toyota Tundra gets about 20 mpg on average and features a turbocharged V6 engine. Although its standard composite bed is tough against dents and scratches, it doesn’t have trick tailgate options like some of its competitors.
7. Ford Mustang
For the 2022 model of this vehicle:
- Average cost of gas per mile driven: $0.35
- Estimated cost of gas for the year: $4,717
- Average annual insurance premium: $1,932
- Estimated total cost for fuel and insurance: $6,649
The Ford Mustang has four-cylinder and V8 engines, offering a quick yet relatively quiet drive. Its safety features include blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping assist.

6. Infiniti Q50
For the 2021 model of this vehicle:
- Average cost of gas per mile driven: $0.34
- Estimated cost of gas for the year: $4,582
- Average annual insurance premium: $2,172
- Estimated total cost for fuel and insurance: $6,754
This car is rated by Zutobi as one of the most expensive, but Edmunds gives it a mediocre rating, sitting at 6.4 out of 10. The 2021 Infiniti Q50 has an effective turbocharged V6 engine pack, but its tech features are lacking. Driving aids can be overly sensitive and its navigation system can be a pain.
5. GMC Yukon
For the 2023 model of this vehicle:
- Average cost of gas per mile driven: $0.38
- Estimated cost of gas for the year: $5,121
- Average annual insurance premium: $1,800
- Estimated total cost for fuel and insurance: $6,921
The GMC Yukon has lots of storage space, about 50% more than its previous model while it still seats up to nine passengers. It can tow between 8,000 and 8,400 pounds depending on which features buyers select.
4. Chevrolet Silverado
For the 2023 model of this vehicle:
- Average cost of gas per mile driven: $0.39
- Estimated cost of gas for the year: $5,256
- Average annual insurance premium: $1,704
- Estimated total cost for fuel and insurance: $6,960
The Chevrolet Silverado offers comfort with lots of legroom and an easy-to-use touchscreen display. This truck is large and features several cameras on its exterior to help with parking. It also has a rear cross-traffic warning system.
3. Toyota 4Runner
For the 2023 model of this vehicle:
- Average cost of gas per mile driven: $0.40
- Estimated cost of gas for the year: $5,390
- Average annual insurance premium: $1,584
- Estimated total cost for fuel and insurance: $6,974
The Toyota 4Runner isn’t particularly fuel-efficient with its V6 engine. It’s better equipped for off-roading than it may be for daily driving (although it’s still adequate, according to Edmund’s experts).
2. GMC Sierra
For the 2023 model of this vehicle:
- Average cost of gas per mile driven: $0.41
- Estimated cost of gas for the year: $5,525
- Average annual insurance premium: $1,776
- Estimated total cost for fuel and insurance: $7,301
The GMC Sierra is very customizable with buyers being able to choose between cab styles and bed lengths. Its size limits its visibility, however. Shorter drivers might have a hard time seeing over the hood and the thick side pillars can also limit how much drivers can see, Edmunds says.
1. Ford F150 Raptor 37
For the 2023 model of this vehicle:
- Average cost of gas per mile driven: $0.44
- Estimated cost of gas for the year: $5,929
- Average annual insurance premium: $1,752
- Estimated total cost for fuel and insurance: $7,681
This model is great for off-roading with optional 37-inch tires, a front-facing camera, and a widened and long-travel suspension. But it lags behind in towing capabilities at 8,200 pounds compared to the standard F-150’s 14,000 pounds. Its large size makes it difficult to drive in narrow places.
