Pawn Stars: 7 Times Rick & the Seller Could N0T Agree

GWM to take on Bentley with luxurious hybrid V8s – report

GWM is reaching further upmarket, and is reportedly working on a new brand that’ll take on the likes of Bentley with high-end sedans and potentially a supercar.

Great Wall Motor is reportedly planning a shot across the bow of high-end European brands, with plans to establish a “super-luxury” brand with cars packing V8 hybrid power.

Chinese outlet LatePost reports the company, which sells cars here under the GWM nameplate, has established a “super-luxury” brand that will be headed by company chairman Wei Jianjun who will be heavily involved in its development.

Song Dongxian, the Chinese company’s former vice president of technology and a specialist in internal-combustion engines, will serve as CEO, with the brand also procuring engineers from European luxury brands.

The as-yet unnamed brand will reportedly be positioned above all of Great Wall Motor’s brands, including the more premium Tank and Wey, and may offer not only sedans but also supercars.

Yangwang U8

LatePost notes the term ‘super-luxury’ is used by the China Passenger Car Association for brands such as Bentley, Ferrari and Lamborghini.

That suggests GWM’s brand could have a similar positioning to BYD’s recently established Yangwang brand, which offers the electric U9 supercar and range-extender U8 luxury off-roader, though it will reportedly take quite a different direction with powertrains.

The brand will reportedly use GWM’s turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine, developed in-house, with a hybrid system. This engine has reportedly been confirmed for an April or May 2025 release.

The publication notes the brand may offer a variety of different powertrain types, but reports word from a source close to the company that the resale value, exclusivity and emotional appeal of combustion powertrains have proved attractive.

The brand will not only give the overall company a halo product, it may bolster profits.

GWM confirmed this month it expects to double its profits this year – specifically, a year-on-year increase of 94.47 per cent to 106.88 per cent, bringing net profit to between RMB 9.4 billion to RMB 10 billion (A$2-2.2 billion).

That’s despite only a 0.21 per cent increase in sales from 2023 to 2024, with 1,233,292 vehicles reaching buyers across its array of brands.

Of this figure, 453,141 vehicles were sold outside of China, an increase of 43.39 per cent on the previous year. While that’s a new record for the company, it suggests a drop in its home market as competition has become fiercer there than ever before.

While the bulk of its sales in China are of mass-market Haval SUVs, GWM has rolled out more premium brands before.

It established Wey in 2016, which specialises in premium SUVs and recently introduced a people mover.

This brand was originally set to sell the Tank 300, which was subsequently spun off into its own Tank brand in China in 2021.

Tank is treated as a sub-brand of GWM in Australia, instead of as a separate brand.

While both the Tank 300 and Tank 500 in Australia come only with turbocharged or hybrid four-cylinder engines, Tank products in China are available with turbocharged V6 powertrains.

The Tank 700 offers a version of the turbo V6 with a plug-in hybrid system, while GWM has previously revealed a concept of a flagship SUV for the brand called the Tank 800.

In 2021, GWM also revealed the outrageously styled Mecha Dragon electric sedan that was set to take on the Porsche Taycan and be the first product of a new brand called Saloon.

However, the company subsequently said it would fold this product into the Ora brand, despite its vastly different design language and positioning. It still has yet to enter production.
